This is the first game I purchased when I got my nintendo DS … and yet I haven’t even reached the half way mark for it. No it’s not because the game is lengthy, but its because I don’t have much interest in it. The gameplay, the story and the music doesn’t appeal to me when I went through the first few hours of it. After that, I stopped playing and went on with other games.I didn’t really want to put down a game which many have find it “outstanding” or “awesome”, but thats really what I feel when I first played the game. Probably because I’m a late starter in the RPG genre and I have gotten used to the more modernized storyline and music. My first RPG game was Final Fantasy 9, followed by Chrono Trigger. Both games have a linear storyline where one incident connects to the next and so on. FF3 was more area based. After you cleared an area, you go to the next and another incident happen. (usually none related with the past events other than “Saving The World”)
After a couple of months of playing other DS games, I finally got the courage to continue the game from where I stopped. Playing through a few hours, I find that the game isn’t as bad as I thought. Although the feeling isn’t comparable to when I first played Final Fantasy 9 or Chrono Trigger, it does offer some fresh features.

Real turn based system and Jobs system are the few key features of Final Fantasy 3. As you progress through the game and save the “Crystals”, you will unlock new jobs. Your characters have the freedom to change from one job to another at anytime during the game, but your job levels will be reseted back to level 1. (for fresh job change) However your previous job level will be maintained. (Thankfully) I’m still experimenting with the job system. I have to say its quite tedious to start fresh for some jobs. I tried changing Ingus from warrior to knight, and things didn’t turn out so well.

Graphical wise, Final Fantasy 3 looks pretty good. The changes from 2D to 3D does bring a new life to it. The graphics are clean and sharp and the characters animate really well. In my opinion, it’s still one of the best looking games for the DS.
Closing comment : My initial thoughts on this game isn’t good but as I progress more into the game, I beginning to find it pretty interesting. However the lack of save points are really frustrating. You can’t save inside the dungeons and only during world map. I had to restart two dungeons twice because I got killed when I reach the dungeon boss. Now when I obtained a new weapon or I leveled up a lot, I will teleport out of the dungeon to save. Not really worth dying after going through such effort. Overall, Final Fantasy 3 is a good game to play but it does take some time to get used to especially if you are new to Final Fantasy.
