2011 Is The Year of Mobile Gaming?
Let’s start with obvious, the Nintendo 3DS
Nintendo 3DS
If you are an avid gamer that keeps up with the latest news, no doubt that you have heard about Nintendo’s next portable gaming device, the 3DS. For the uninformed, this device is capable of producing 3D effects without the need of special glasses.
Personally I couldn’t care less whether or not it’s in 3D for one good reason; motion sickness. Although I have yet to experience the real thing to make such assumptions, it’s best for me to proceed with that in mind. What I really care about are the games that are coming out with the 3DS. New Resident Evil? Sweet! New Kingdom Hearts game? Sold, no questions asked!
The 3DS will be out in Japan in February 2011 while the rest of the world gets it a month later. Hopefully the rest of the world includes South East Asia.
PlayStation Portable Successor a.k.a PSP 2
Sony has yet to show its hand on their next successor to the PlayStation Portable but word has gotten out that the SDK has been sent to numerous first and third party developers. Wikipedia has stated the hardware consists of HD touch screens, two analog sticks, cameras, rear touch panel and 1GB of ram. While it’s currently nothing more than a super beefed up portable, it would be interesting to see how it holds up to the term “high def gaming”.
PlayStation Phone, Xperia Play, PlayStation Pocket .. Your Call
I can’t seem to shake off the feeling that the PlayStation Phone (or Xperia Play) is Sony’s way of filling in the gap for casual gaming. First of all, it wouldn’t be smart to create yet again another PlayStation Portable revision with the added phone function, especially when PSP 2 is in the near future. Secondly, following the poor reception of PSP Go, I doubt Sony has that much money to burn on a similar project.
The only logical conclusion I can come out with is that Sony wishes to address the issue gamers have on pure touch screen devices (the iPhone and iPod Touch) with proper d-pads and buttons. Think of it this way; if I want to play games like Angry Birds, I just use the touchscreen. If I want to play Street Fighter, I just flip down the controls. Best of both worlds huh? Hopefully that is what Sony has in mind.

Razer Switchblade
No … it isn’t some pocket knife Razer created for you to murder gamers with. It is actually a mobile PC gaming device … with hell lot of cool features. A picture (or video in this case) is worth a thousand words so just check it out.
As for now there are no official announcements as of when it will be released on the market but most gaming blogs assumed that we will only see it after a year.
So is 2011 the year of mobile gaming? It certainly looks like it.
